Rockland Community College (RCC) is marking a significant milestone this year—its 35th Annual Chess Event and Exhibition. The event will take place on Thursday, April 3, at 12:30 PM in the Student Union, Room 3214, on RCC’s main campus in Suffern, NY. This long-standing tradition has been a staple of campus life for over three decades, and this year, it will feature a special appearance by International Grandmaster Gennady Sagalchik.
The event, open to all RCC students, employees, and community members, will also welcome three student representatives from each Rockland County school district to participate in the tournament. “Over the past thirty-four years, this event has become a highlight of campus life, with students eagerly awaiting the chance to learn from and challenge International Grandmaster Gennady Sagalchik,” said Peter Arvanites, Faculty Advisor for the Chess Club and Professor of Mathematics at RCC.
Sagalchik, a Belarus-born chess champion and coach, will engage with attendees and share his expertise. As a three-time Pan-American Intercollegiate Champion and a former U.S. Championship participant, he has earned numerous accolades and played a key role in leading Manhattan Community College and Brooklyn College to victory.
Whether you’re an experienced player or a beginner, there’s a seat at the board for everyone. For more information, please contact Peter Arvanites at 845-574-4767 or Peter.Arvanites@sunyrockland.edu.
